The annual late night pilgrimage to Cannock Chase was due as the elusive Night Shadows were surely there by now. A tough bird to get, but with plenty of darkness around then they should present themselves. After a few flyover Woodcocks it was getting quite tense, but then almost at the point of total darkness, the bird presented itself, neither being able to be seen or heard - ideal and a typical classic experience. Just what the doctor ordered for the year list and 194 BOU up!!
Classic Night Shadow environment. It could be here, it could be there, no one knows but we'll still tick it!!! If you can see it, note the strong bristles around its large gape, intended to increase the size of the "trapping funnel" The overall colouration and white spots on tail corners should rule out Egyptian Night Shadow to all but the most determined stringers....
